Dr. Thomas S. Matney (1928–2010) was a pioneering microbiologist and geneticist at UT M.D. Anderson from 1962 until his retirement. Known for his research on bacterial genetics and carcinogenesis, he became the first Associate Dean of the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and was later named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

The Thomas S. Matney award recognizes outstanding presentation of research by a Postdoctoral Fellow.
