Dr. Samuel Kaplan (1934–2024) was a leading microbiologist in the molecular genetics of membrane biosynthesis in photosynthetic bacteria. From 1989 to 2011, he was the founding Chair of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UTHealth Houston and served as the American Society for Microbiology Treasurer from 1991 to 1999.

The Samuel Kaplan Award recognizes outstanding Poster Presentation of Graduate Student research.
